What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium, supplied as chromium picolinate at 200 micrograms per capsule. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and insulin function.
The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients — rice flour and cellulose — which are used as a filler and capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency. For type 2 diabetes, the evidence suggests it may be possibly effective — some research shows chromium can lower blood glucose, especially in people whose diabetes isn't well controlled.
However, for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), high blood pressure, and schizophrenia, the evidence we have rates chromium as possibly ineffective for these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Skin reactions — including rashes and hives — have also been reported, especially in people with a contact allergy to chromium. Rare serious side effects include kidney and liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts; one case of severe blood problems was reported in a woman taking a much higher dose (1200–2400 mcg daily) for several months.
High or long-term doses may carry risks for some people, so stick to typical doses unless your doctor advises otherwise. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, small amounts from a balanced diet or prenatal vitamin are generally considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your medications against these types: insulin and antidiabetes drugs (Moderate severity — risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or thyroid hormone (Moderate — may reduce absorption by up to 17%), and NSAIDs or aspirin (Minor — may increase chromium levels in your blood).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium picolinate may be worth considering if you have a chromium deficiency or want to explore its possibly effective role in blood sugar management — but only after you check with your pharmacist or doctor. If you take insulin, diabetes medication, thyroid hormone, or regular NSAIDs or aspirin, you absolutely need to discuss this supplement first.

Chromium Picolinate 200 mcg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium Picolinate by NOW does interact with several medication types, and the most serious concern is with insulin and antidiabetes drugs.
Chromium may increase insulin sensitivity and theoretically lower blood sugar, which could raise your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — especially important if you're already on diabetes medication. If you take insulin or diabetes pills, your dosing may need adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (thyroid hormone). Clinical research shows that chromium picolinate may reduce how much levothyroxine your body absorbs — in one study, absorption dropped by 17%.
This could make your thyroid medication less effective. Additionally, NSAIDs and aspirin may increase how much chromium your body absorbs, which could raise chromium levels in your blood.
Additionally, if you don't take any of these medication types, you're clear. Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions before starting.

Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
