What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium picolinate, a form of chromium bound to picolinic acid for absorption. Chromium is a trace mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and uses insulin.
The capsule also contains rice flour and hypromellose, which are inactive ingredients that help hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a balanced diet. For type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, the evidence is mixed — some research suggests it may help with blood sugar control in poorly controlled diabetes (possibly effective), but for prediabetes it appears possibly ineffective.
The facts we hold don't show that chromium helps with schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects like kidney damage, liver damage, and low platelet counts have been reported, usually at much higher doses or with long-term use. Skin rashes and itching have also been reported in some people, especially those with a contact allergy to chromium.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the facts don't provide specific guidance. Small amounts from food or a prenatal vitamin are generally considered acceptable, but taking extra chromium supplements during pregnancy or while nursing should be discussed with your doctor first — there isn't enough safety data on supplement doses to be certain.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your pharmacist if you take insulin or diabetes medications — chromium may lower blood sugar too much. Also flag levothyroxine or other thyroid medications, as chromium can reduce how much you absorb; you'll likely need to space them several hours apart.
NSAIDs and aspirin are a minor consideration but still worth mentioning.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium picolinate may help if you have a chromium deficiency or want to support blood sugar control, especially if you have poorly controlled diabetes. If you take insulin, diabetes medications, or thyroid hormones, talk to your pharmacist before starting — we need to check your specific medications and may need to adjust how you time your doses.
Stick to the labeled dose and avoid long-term high amounts without medical guidance.

Formula
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that is best known for its role as an insulin co-factor. Chromium is therefore critical for the maintenance of healthy glucose and carbohydrate metabolism; however, it is also important for the utilization of fat and protein. Scientific studies also indicate that it may play a role in cardiovascular health. As part of a healthy diet and exercise program, Chromium Picolinate may help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels already within the normal range and may also help to support a healthy body composition.

Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), a Moderate-severity interaction: it may bind to the drug in your intestines and reduce how much your body absorbs. Clinical research found a 17% drop in levothyroxine levels when taken together.
If you take thyroid medication, separate this supplement by several hours. NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) and aspirin are Minor interactions — they may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains.
Additionally, run your exact medications through the checker below before you start — Altogether, these interactions span 177 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
