Chromium Picolinate Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chromium Picolinate against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium. It's a trace mineral that plays a role in how your body uses glucose (blood sugar) and handles insulin.
The product is a powder with no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, and there's evidence it may help with blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes — though the data isn't conclusive. For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), high blood pressure, and schizophrenia, the evidence doesn't support benefit at this time.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare but serious effects including kidney and liver damage and a blood disorder called rhabdomyolysis have been reported, as have skin rashes and contact dermatitis in people with chromium sensitivity. There isn't enough safety data on higher or long-term doses, so stick to standard amounts unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins are generally fine, but extra supplement doses should be avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor recommends them. We don't have lactation data on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on insulin or antidiabetes drugs (moderate risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or other thyroid replacements (moderate risk of reduced absorption), or NSAIDs and aspirin (minor risk of increased chromium levels).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium picolinate is most useful if you have a documented chromium deficiency or your doctor is monitoring it for blood sugar control. If you take insulin, antidiabetes drugs, thyroid medication, or NSAIDs regularly, check with your pharmacist before starting — these interactions are real and worth managing.
Generally well tolerated at standard doses, but high amounts or long-term use need careful oversight.

Chromium monograph & interactionsChromium Picolinate by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium Picolinate by BulkSupplements.com does interact with several medication types, most notably blood sugar medications.
If you take insulin or antidiabetes drugs (like metformin or sulfonylureas), chromium may increase your body's insulin sensitivity and theoretically add to their blood-sugar-lowering effect — raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The concern is moderate enough that you'll want to monitor your blood glucose and talk to your doctor before starting this product.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium may also reduce how well your body absorbs levothyroxine (Synthroid, others), a thyroid hormone replacement. Clinical research showed a 17% drop in levothyroxine levels when taken with chromium picolinate; if you take a thyroid medication, space them apart by at least a few hours.
NSAIDs and aspirin may increase how much chromium your body absorbs, which is a minor concern but worth knowing if you take these pain relievers regularly.
Altogether, these interactions span 177 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to look up your exact drugs before you start.

Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
