Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep an eye on: Kombiglyze (saxagliptin plus extended-release metformin) already works to lower your blood sugar. Chromium may gently nudge blood sugar down too, mostly by helping your body respond better to insulin. When you stack the two, those effects can add up, and that raises the chance of your sugar dropping too low (hypoglycemia).

What that can feel like: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, hunger, or confusion. This is more likely if your diabetes was already well managed. The good news is the effect from chromium is usually modest. Please don't stop or change either one on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep monitoring your blood sugar so any low readings get caught early.

Chromium
  • Blood sugar support in type 2 diabetes
  • Weight loss and appetite control
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Cholesterol and lipid support
  • General nutritional supplement

Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in how the body handles sugar and fat. Some studies suggest it may modestly help blood sugar control in certain people with type 2 diabetes, but results are mixed and the effect on weight loss is small and uncertain. For most healthy people who eat a varied diet, supplements are not needed; check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
