HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Collagen Peptides Unflavored by Vital Proteins
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: sodium and bovine collagen peptides. Collagen peptides are broken-down protein from cow collagen, designed to supply amino acids your body uses in skin, joints, and muscle.
Sodium is an essential mineral that helps with fluid balance and nerve function, but this product's sodium content is the main thing to watch if you're on certain medications or managing blood pressure.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The collagen peptides in this product are possibly effective for aging skin and dry skin based on the evidence we hold. For muscle strength and athletic performance, the data shows insufficient evidence either way.
The sodium itself has limited effectiveness ratings in our data — it's possibly effective for amphotericin B nephrotoxicity (kidney damage from a specific antibiotic) and likely effective in cystic fibrosis, though those aren't typical reasons someone buys a collagen supplement.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bovine collagen peptides are generally well tolerated as a dietary protein, though a small number of users may experience nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, or gas — these side effects are rare. Sodium is safe in normal dietary amounts, but this product adds supplemental sodium, which can worsen high blood pressure and strain your heart if intake gets too high.
There isn't enough safety data on collagen peptides in pregnancy and breastfeeding to know either way, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before using if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before starting if you take blood pressure medications, lithium, corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate bowel prep, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing medications. High sodium intake can reduce how well blood pressure drugs work and shift lithium levels dangerously.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Collagen peptides are a reasonable choice if you're looking to support skin or want a collagen-based protein powder. The catch is the sodium content — if you take blood pressure medications, lithium, or any medications that interact with sodium, you need to talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Same goes if you have heart disease or high blood pressure already.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Unflavored contains sodium, which interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — high sodium intake can reduce how well they work and may require dose increases to control your blood pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium also interacts moderately with corticosteroids (which can cause your body to retain sodium), lithium (a mood stabilizer where sodium changes can shift drug levels dangerously), didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate (a bowel-prep agent), tolvaptan (used for low sodium levels), and other sodium-containing drugs. Each of these interactions carries a risk of high blood sodium (hypernatremia) or altered drug effectiveness.
The bovine collagen peptides ingredient has no known interactions with medications. Altogether, these interactions span 205 individual medications.
Before you start this product, use the checker below to search your exact medications — especially if you take blood pressure drugs, lithium, or any HIV or heart medications.

For each ingredient in Collagen Peptides Unflavored with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
