HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Colon Detox+ by Herbs SRA
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Colon Detox+ contains four active ingredients. Cascara sagrada extract and senna extract are both stimulant laxatives—they work by increasing muscle contractions in the bowel to move stool.
Clove is an herbal ingredient used traditionally for digestive support, and psyllium is a fiber source that absorbs water to bulk up stool. The product also includes cellulose as an inactive ingredient (capsule filler).
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product is mixed. Senna extract is rated Likely Effective for constipation, and both senna and cascara sagrada are rated Possibly Effective for bowel preparation.
However, cascara sagrada's effectiveness for constipation itself is rated Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate, meaning the data doesn't yet establish whether it works for that purpose. Clove's effectiveness for cough, pain, or dyspepsia is rated Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate.
Psyllium's effectiveness is not in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Short-term use of cascara sagrada and senna in appropriate doses is generally well tolerated, though mild abdominal cramping and discomfort are common. The real caution is long-term use: cascara sagrada carries risks of liver damage, severe vomiting (especially if improperly prepared), and with extended use, muscle wasting, urine and blood in stool.
Senna similarly causes common side effects like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea, but rare serious ones include skin reactions and muscle wasting from overuse. Cascara sagrada is not recommended during pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding because active compounds may pass into breast milk.
Clove is rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation. Senna's pregnancy and lactation safety data are not on file.
Clove is safe as a food spice but concentrated clove oil can be toxic—even 5–10 mL of clove oil can poison children. Always use food amounts unless your provider clears a medicinal dose.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check the following medication types with the search tool below: blood thinners like warfarin (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), water pills and potassium-lowering drugs (Moderate risk of low potassium), digoxin and other heart medications (Moderate risk of toxicity), blood-sugar medicines including insulin (Moderate risk of low blood sugar from clove), drugs processed through multiple liver pathways including some antidepressants and blood pressure medications (Moderate risk of increased drug levels from clove), and birth control pills (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness from senna). No interactions are documented for psyllium, which we could not check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Colon Detox+ is designed for short-term constipation or bowel prep with ingredients that do have some evidence, but both major laxative ingredients carry real risks if used long-term. If you take a water pill, heart medication, blood thinner, blood-sugar medication, or birth control, check your medications with the tool on this page before starting.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor about whether short-term use is right for you and how long is safe.

Colon Detox+ by Herbs SRA Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Colon Detox+ by Herbs SRA contains two ingredients with documented interactions: cascara sagrada extract and senna extract.
Both are stimulant laxatives, and cascara sagrada's most serious interactions are Moderate-severity effects on several drug types. The biggest concern is with blood thinners like warfarin—cascara sagrada can trigger diarrhea, which increases warfarin's effects and bleeding risk.
Clove also has documented interactions but none ranked higher than Moderate.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Cascara sagrada interacts Moderately with potassium-lowering drugs: corticosteroids and water pills (diuretics) both raise the risk of low potassium (hypokalemia), as does the heart medication digoxin. Taking cascara with other stimulant laxatives compounds fluid and electrolyte losses.
It may also slightly reduce how your body clears certain medications metabolized through the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway (Minor severity).
Clove's active compound, eugenol, can theoretically slow the breakdown of several drug classes: blood-sugar medications (antidiabetes drugs), drugs processed through multiple liver pathways (CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9 substrates)—all Moderate severity. In theory it may also increase bleeding risk with blood thinners or blood-thinning supplements (Minor severity).
Senna extract carries parallel concerns: Moderate-severity interactions with water pills, other stimulant laxatives, warfarin, and digoxin; it may also reduce how well birth control pills (estrogens) work.
We could not check psyllium—no interaction data is on file for it. Altogether, these interactions span 1,060 individual medications.

Clove
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP1A2 in a dose-dependent manner,. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, inhibits CYP2C9 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP2D6 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that eugenol, the principal constituent of clove, can inhibit CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, clove oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that eugenol, a constituent of clove, has antiplatelet activity. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Others)
Theoretically, topical application of clove oil with ibuprofen might increase the absorption and side effects of topical ibuprofen.
Laboratory research shows that topical application of clove oil increases the absorption of topical ibuprofen. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cascara Sagrada Extract
Corticosteroids
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with corticosteroids.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might cause hypokalemia, potentially increasing the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Stimulant Laxatives
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might have additive adverse effects when taken with stimulant laxatives.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects and might compound fluid and electrolyte losses when taken with stimulant laxatives.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects. In some people, cascara sagrada can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that cascara sagrada can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Senna Extract
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with digoxin.
Overuse/abuse of senna increases the risk of adverse effects from cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin, due to potassium depletion.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Overuse of senna might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss and increase the risk for hypokalemia.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking senna may interfere with the absorption of exogenous estrogens.
Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that senna reduces the absorption of estradiol and decreases serum concentrations of estrone and estrone sulfate by decreasing intestinal transit time.
Stimulant Laxatives
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk for fluid and electrolyte loss when taken with other stimulant laxatives.
Senna is a stimulant laxative; concomitant use with other stimulant laxatives might compound fluid and electrolyte loss.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, excessive use of senna might increase the effects of warfarin.
Senna has stimulant laxative effects and can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding. In one case report, excessive use of senna for 3 weeks resulted in diarrhea, bloody stools, and an elevated INR of 11.9.
