DMAE is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common are stomach cramps, stomach pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

It's also been reported to cause constipation, headache, insomnia, confusion, depression, mood changes (including hypomania), and in people with schizophrenia, worsening of symptoms — especially at higher doses. Evidence of safety is limited, so caution is warranted.
