Deanol is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do happen. The most common ones reported are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.

Other effects have included constipation, headache, insomnia, confusion, and in people with psychiatric conditions, mood changes like depression or hypomania. Higher doses — over 1000 mg daily — carry extra risk of mood changes, and 1500 mg daily has been reported to worsen schizophrenia symptoms in people with that diagnosis.

Safety data in pregnancy is not on file. Breastfeeding safety is unknown, and the data advises against use while breastfeeding because some animal research raises concern.
