Fennel Seed Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Fennel Seed against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Fennel Seed by Banyan Botanicals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is 100% fennel seed — a single active ingredient with no other fillers or binders. Fennel has been used traditionally to support digestion and ease menstrual discomfort, and it comes here in a whole-seed form, ready to brew as a tea.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence is strongest for fennel's use in dysmenorrhea (painful periods), where it's rated possibly effective. For bronchitis, anxiety, nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting), and cholera, the evidence on file is insufficient to establish whether it works.
If you're considering it for one of those other purposes, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current evidence supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Fennel is generally well tolerated when taken orally — most people don't have problems with it. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal discomfort, sensitivity to sunlight, and allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to it.
Rare but serious, seizures have been reported. If you have a fennel or anise allergy, you'll want to avoid this product.
During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, the safety data advises against medicinal or concentrated amounts of fennel due to limited safety data and its hormone-like effects. Food amounts are likely fine during breastfeeding, but medicinal doses haven't been well studied.
If you're pregnant or nursing and want to use fennel, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), birth control, hormone replacement therapy, tamoxifen, or ciprofloxacin. Fennel may reduce how well some of these work or increase your bleeding risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Fennel seed may help with painful periods, but it interacts with blood thinners, birth control, hormone therapy, and several other medications — so check your full medication list with your own doctor or pharmacist before you start. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding in medicinal amounts, get personalized guidance first.

Fennel monograph & interactionsFennel Seed by Banyan Botanicals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Banyan Botanicals' Fennel Seed interacts with a number of medication types through its fennel content.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs) — fennel may increase bleeding risk, and animal research suggests it has blood-thinning properties of its own.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Fennel also affects hormonal medications. It may reduce how well birth control works and could interfere with hormone replacement therapy, since some of fennel's compounds act like estrogen in your body.
If you take tamoxifen (a breast cancer medication), fennel might weaken its effects. Additionally, fennel may raise levels of drugs your body breaks down through a specific liver pathway (CYP3A4 substrates), potentially making them stronger than intended — and it can cut the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin (Cipro), an antibiotic, by nearly half, likely because fennel contains minerals that bind to the drug.
Additionally, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page before you start. Altogether, these interactions span 741 individual medications.

Fennel
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, fennel might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Theoretically, fennel might decrease the levels and clinical effects of ciprofloxacin.
Animal research shows that fennel reduces ciprofloxacin bioavailability by nearly 50%, possibly due to the metal cations such as calcium, iron, and magnesium contained in fennel. This study also found that fennel increased tissue distribution and slowed elimination of ciprofloxacin.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the effects of contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the antiestrogenic effect of tamoxifen.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity, which may interfere with the antiestrogenic activity of tamoxifen.
