Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product has 3 active ingredients: omega-9, omega-3 (as DHA, the long-chain omega-3 from fish oil), and omega-6 fatty acids. The flaxseed oil itself is a blend of these components.
The softgel is made with gelatin, glycerin, and purified water as inactive ingredients — these are the capsule and filler materials that hold the oil.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For the omega-3 (DHA) in this product, the evidence shows it's possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and possibly effective for reducing preterm labor risk. However, for cognitive function and ADHD, the evidence suggests DHA is possibly ineffective — meaning the data doesn't support those uses.
We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for omega-9 or omega-6.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
DHA is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses for most adults. The most common side effects are minor — belching, a fishy aftertaste, loose stools, and nausea.
Rare reports mention rash, acne, and hair loss, though the link to DHA isn't clear. There's also a rare concern about increased bleeding risk at very high doses.
DHA is considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but it's recommended in prenatal care only under your doctor's guidance and from a purified, low-mercury source. DHA does pass into breast milk and is generally acceptable — check with your doctor on the right dose and source for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — DHA may increase bleeding risk. Also check blood pressure medications (since fish oil can lower BP further) and diabetes drugs (DHA may raise blood sugar).
Use the medication checker below with your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking to support cholesterol levels or reduce preterm labor risk, the omega-3 in this product may help — talk to your doctor about whether flaxseed oil is right for you. If you take blood thinners, blood pressure meds, or diabetes medications, check with us first: the omega-3 here can interact with those drugs.

Flaxseed Oil 1 gram by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Flaxseed Oil 1 gram contains omega-3 (as DHA), omega-9, and omega-6 fatty acids.
The omega-3 component has documented interactions with medications — the most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs), where a moderate-severity interaction exists: DHA may theoretically increase bleeding risk when combined with these medications, though most clinical evidence suggests DHA alone doesn't significantly affect clotting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
DHA also carries moderate-severity interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) — fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might add to the effect of your current medication, raising the risk of blood pressure dropping too low. Additionally, there's a moderate interaction with diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs): DHA appears to raise fasting blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, which could reduce how well your diabetes medication works.
We could not check omega-9 and omega-6 for interactions — we hold no data on those ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 372 individual medications.
If you take any blood thinners, blood pressure medications, or diabetes drugs, run your exact prescriptions through the interaction checker on this page before you start.

Flaxseed Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, using flaxseed oil in combination with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Small clinical studies show that consuming flaxseed oil might decrease platelet aggregation and increase bleeding time.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.
Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Concomitant use of flaxseed oil and ezetimibe reduces the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseed oil.
In one clinical study, concomitant consumption of ezetimibe 10 mg daily with flaxseed oil 2 grams providing 1 gram of alpha-linolenic acid daily blocked the absorption of alpha-linolenic acid, resulting in an overall reduction in alpha-linolenic plasma levels from baseline.
