Evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
B. bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. For most other uses covered in our data—including age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, asthma, anxiety, and athletic performance—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate.

How safe is it?

B. longum, B. bifidum, and L. acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people, but anyone who is seriously ill or has a weakened immune system should check with their doctor first. Rare gastrointestinal side effects have been reported with these strains, including abdominal discomfort, bloating, flatulence, constipation, and in isolated cases, dry cough.
Very rarely, cases of Bifidobacterium or L. acidophilus infection (bacteremia or sepsis) have occurred, chiefly in critically ill infants or those with recent surgery. Chicory root fiber commonly causes gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort; it may also trigger allergies in people sensitive to the ragweed family.
The product carries cautions in pregnancy: chicory may stimulate the uterus in medicinal amounts and is rated possibly unsafe, while B. bifidum and L. acidophilus are rated possibly safe. Breastfeeding safety data are limited for all ingredients; consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
