Gentian Ingredients & Drug Interactions

What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gentian against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic Gentian root liquid extract from Gentiana lutea. It's prepared as a liquid extract, which means the plant material has been concentrated into a drinkable form.
The only other ingredient listed is menstruum, which is the liquid used to extract and preserve the gentian.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gentian isn't solid yet — at least not for the conditions we have data on. For wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis (sinus inflammation), and gastritis (stomach lining inflammation), our records show insufficient reliable evidence to make a real rating.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research isn't there to prove it does.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach. At higher doses — where research is sparse — we can't speak to safety.
The traditional and safety cautions are strong enough that we'd recommend skipping gentian during pregnancy. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable safety information either, so it's best to avoid it then too.
In one trial where patients took gentian tincture alongside turmeric and ginger, a number of participants experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating serious enough to quit the regimen.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs), check with your pharmacist before starting gentian — it can lower blood pressure further and raise the risk of dizziness or fainting. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian might be worth considering if you're curious about its traditional uses, but the evidence for what it actually does isn't established yet. If you take blood pressure medication, this is one to check with us about first — the interaction is real.
Talk to your pharmacist before you start, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any prescription drugs.

Gentian by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gentian by Herbal Terra is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with one important medication category.
The main concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs). Gentian can relax blood vessel walls and lower blood pressure on its own, so taking it alongside blood pressure drugs might push your pressure too low — a condition called low blood pressure (hypotension).
This is a Moderate-severity interaction, meaning it's worth planning around.
