Gentian Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Pure Herbs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gentian against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gentian root extract. Gentian has a long history in herbal medicine, traditionally used to support digestion and other functions.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gentian isn't established in our data. It's rated as having insufficient reliable evidence for wound healing, obesity, rhinosinusitis (sinus inflammation), and gastritis (stomach inflammation).
That means the studies so far haven't been strong enough to say whether it works for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian root is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach and hasn't been studied much at higher doses. In one trial where people took gentian tincture combined with turmeric and ginger, a number of participants reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating, and several stopped taking it because of these symptoms.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend gentian during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then. The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable safety information, so avoid use while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) before taking this product. Gentian may lower blood pressure, and combining it with drugs that do the same could increase the risk of pressure dropping too low.
With 172 individual medications potentially affected across this ingredient class, use the medication checker on this page to confirm your exact drugs first.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian root extract may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional herbal support, but the evidence for specific health benefits isn't established. The main caution is with blood pressure medications — this can lower your pressure and might do so too much in combination.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it, especially if you take any medication for blood pressure, and skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Gentian by Pure Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pure Herbs Gentian contains gentian root extract, which interacts with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives).
The concern is moderate: gentian can relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure on its own, so combining it with drugs that do the same thing might push your pressure too low (hypotension).
