Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients. Sodium is a mineral your body needs in small amounts for nerve and muscle function, but the dosage in this supplement adds to your total daily intake.
Green-lipped mussel powder is derived from a New Zealand shellfish and is included for its potential nutritional profile. The product also contains inactive ingredients — hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (a capsule material), water, and rosemary leaf extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence supporting these ingredients for specific health goals is limited. Sodium's effectiveness is rated from insufficient evidence (for bipolar disorder and heart failure) to possibly effective (for kidney damage from amphotericin B, an antifungal drug).
Green-lipped mussel powder has insufficient evidence for asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, and exercise-related muscle soreness — meaning we don't yet have solid data that it works for any of these. Talk with your pharmacist about whether this product makes sense for what you're looking for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is generally well tolerated at normal dietary amounts, but this product adds to your total sodium intake. Too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney stress — especially if you already have heart or kidney disease.
The green-lipped mussel powder itself is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset (abdominal pain, acid reflux, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence) in some people. Rare cases of liver inflammation have been reported with a specific mussel extract (Seatone).
Anyone with a shellfish allergy must avoid this product. There isn't enough data on the green-lipped mussel to know if it's safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if either applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications, lithium, corticosteroids, didanosine (Videx), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (Samsca), or any other sodium-containing drugs. The sodium in this supplement can reduce how well some of these work or raise your sodium to unsafe levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may work for you if you're looking for a mussel-based supplement and don't have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, or take blood pressure medications or lithium. If you take any prescription medication at all, check it against the interaction tool below before starting — the sodium here can affect a wide range of drugs.
Anyone with a shellfish allergy should skip it.

Green Lipped Mussel Powder by Xtendlife Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Xtendlife Green Lipped Mussel Powder contains sodium, which can interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — high sodium intake can blunt their effectiveness and may force you to need higher doses to control your blood pressure. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium in this product may also interact moderately with corticosteroids (which already cause your body to hold onto sodium), lithium for bipolar disorder, didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (used to raise sodium levels), and other sodium-containing drugs — all raising the risk of too much sodium in your blood. The green-lipped mussel powder itself has no documented drug interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 203 individual medications. If you take any blood pressure medication, lithium, corticosteroids, or HIV or other prescription drugs, run them through the checker below before you start this supplement.

For each ingredient in Green Lipped Mussel Powder with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
