What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium, a mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and uses insulin. It's supplied as a single 200 microgram capsule in a gelatin capsule shell.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for chromium depends on what you're using it for. It is rated Likely Effective for chromium deficiency — the condition it's meant to prevent or treat.
For type 2 diabetes, the evidence is Possibly Effective: some research suggests chromium may help lower blood glucose levels, especially in people whose diabetes isn't well controlled. For prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), schizophrenia, and high blood pressure, the evidence is Possibly Ineffective — meaning the studies don't show a clear benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild: gastrointestinal upset, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Skin reactions including rashes and itching have also been reported, especially with certain chromium forms like chromium picolinate. Rare serious effects like kidney or liver damage and low platelet counts have been documented, though they're uncommon.
High or long-term doses carry more risk, so stick to typical doses unless your doctor advises otherwise. During pregnancy, small amounts from a balanced diet or prenatal vitamin are considered safe, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them — the same applies during breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antidiabetes drugs (like metformin or sulfonylureas) or insulin — chromium may lower your blood sugar further and raise hypoglycemia risk. Also flag levothyroxine (Synthroid) or other thyroid hormones, NSAIDs, and aspirin, all of which have documented Moderate or Minor interactions with chromium.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GTF Chromium makes sense if you have a chromium deficiency or want to explore it for blood sugar support, but you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you take diabetes medication, thyroid hormone, pain relievers, or aspirin. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider before adding extra chromium on top of what's already in your prenatal vitamin or diet.

For each ingredient in GTF Chromium 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
