Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chromium, delivered as GTF chromium (glucose tolerance factor) in a 200 mcg dose per capsule. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar and insulin.
The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — brewer's yeast, cellulose, and magnesium stearate — which help form and stabilize the supplement.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency, which is rare but can occur. For type 2 diabetes and prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), the evidence rates it as possibly effective and possibly ineffective, respectively — meaning the research is mixed and inconclusive.
For schizophrenia and high blood pressure, current evidence rates it as possibly ineffective. Talk with your doctor about whether chromium makes sense for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are mild — gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects (kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown, and low platelet counts) have been reported, usually at much higher doses or with long-term use. Skin rashes, hives, and contact dermatitis are also possible, especially in people with a chromium contact allergy.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take antidiabetes drugs or insulin — chromium may lower blood sugar and increase hypoglycemia risk. Also flag levothyroxine (thyroid medication), since chromium can reduce its absorption.
NSAIDs and aspirin may increase chromium levels in your blood, though this is a minor concern.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
GTF Chromium 200 mcg may be worth considering if you have chromium deficiency or want to explore its possibly effective role in diabetes management — but only under your doctor's or pharmacist's eye. If you take insulin, antidiabetes medication, thyroid replacement (levothyroxine), NSAIDs, or aspirin, you'll want to check this product first to make sure the timing and dose are safe for you.

GTF Chromium 200 mcg by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solaray's GTF Chromium 200 mcg contains a single active ingredient — chromium — which does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs and insulin: chromium may lower blood sugar additively, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This effect is especially relevant if you have poorly controlled type 2 diabetes or take insulin to manage your blood sugar.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts with levothyroxine (thyroid replacement medication like Synthroid). It may bind the drug in your digestive tract and reduce how much your body absorbs — clinical research found a 17% drop in levothyroxine levels when chromium picolinate was taken at the same time.
NSAIDs and aspirin can increase how much chromium your body absorbs, which might raise chromium levels in your blood, though this is rated Minor severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 177 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, especially if you take diabetes or thyroid medication, check your exact drugs using the search tool on this page.

For each ingredient in GTF Chromium 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
