Guggul is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but it does cause side effects in some people. The most common are digestive complaints — belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting — plus headache, an unpleasant taste, and allergic or non-allergic skin reactions like rash and itching.

Skin reactions appear to be dose-dependent: higher doses (2,000 mg three times daily) caused reactions in about 15% of people in one study, compared with 3% at lower doses (1,000 mg three times daily). A rare serious side effect is rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown).

Topically, guggul can cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Guggul is likely unsafe during pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus and its safety hasn't been established.

There isn't enough safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided. Use it only under the guidance of your own doctor or pharmacist.
