Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hoodia 800 mg contains one active ingredient: South African Hoodia gordonii, a plant extract used as an appetite suppressant. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — gelatin, rice powder, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which help hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for hoodia and weight loss is insufficient to rate its effectiveness. While it has been studied for obesity, the data we hold does not establish that it works for this purpose.
If you're considering it for appetite suppression or weight management, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hoodia has limited safety data. Reported minor side effects include disturbances of skin sensation, headache, dizziness, giddiness, and nausea.
There is also concern that it may increase blood pressure and heart rate. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough information to know it's safe in these situations, so avoid it unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Hoodia 800 mg, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications (such as captopril, enalapril, losartan, or valsartan), beta-blockers (such as atenolol or metoprolol), diabetes medications, or insulin. Hoodia may reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure and heart-rate drugs and may enhance the blood-glucose-lowering effects of diabetes medications and insulin, raising your risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hoodia may be considered by people looking for an appetite suppressant, but the evidence that it works isn't established in our data. If you take blood pressure medications, heart-rate drugs, diabetes medications, or insulin, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — hoodia may interfere with how these drugs work.
The limited safety profile and potential to raise blood pressure make it important to get personalized advice from your own healthcare provider.

Hoodia 800 mg by Bronson Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hoodia 800 mg by Bronson Laboratories contains South African Hoodia gordonii, which interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) and heart-rate drugs (beta-blockers) — hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which may reduce how well these drugs work and increase your blood pressure risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hoodia may also enhance the blood-glucose-lowering effects of diabetes medications and insulin. Animal research shows a compound in hoodia called gordonoside F can boost insulin secretion, which theoretically could lower your blood sugar more than intended.
If you take diabetes drugs or insulin, your blood glucose levels should be monitored closely.
Additionally, you may also want to check other antidiabetes drugs you're on. Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications.

South African Hoodia gordonii
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
