Why this applies to Bosentan

Bosentan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Bosentan helps relax the blood vessels in your lungs to ease the pressure of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Hoodia, on the other hand, has been shown in some research to nudge blood pressure upward. So in theory, taking hoodia could work against what bosentan is trying to do, making it a little less effective at controlling your condition.

I'll be straight with you though: this is a theoretical worry based on how hoodia behaves, not on studies of these two together. Hoodia also hasn't proven it does much for weight loss in the first place. Since pulmonary hypertension is serious, I'd skip hoodia and check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

What Is Bosentan Used For?

Brand name: Tracleer

Bosentan is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. In adults, it helps improve the ability to exercise and slows how quickly the disease gets worse.

In children aged 3 years and older with idiopathic (no known cause) or congenital (present from birth) PAH, bosentan is used to lower resistance in the lung blood vessels, which is expected to improve exercise ability. Tracleer is one brand approved for both adults and pediatric patients with PAH.
