Hoodia and Bisoprolol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hoodia interacts with whole categories of medication. Bisoprolol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hoodia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Bisoprolol

Bisoprolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the concern with pairing hoodia and bisoprolol. Bisoprolol is a beta blocker you take to bring your blood pressure and heart rate down. Some research suggests hoodia can actually raise blood pressure. So if you add hoodia, it could work against your bisoprolol and make it harder to keep your numbers where your doctor wants them.

I'll be honest with you: this is mostly a theoretical worry based on how hoodia behaves, not strong proof in people taking bisoprolol. Still, if you check your blood pressure at home and notice it creeping up, that's worth paying attention to. Before trying hoodia, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change your bisoprolol on your own.

BETA-BLOCKERS

2 of 2

Bisoprolol also falls under BETA-BLOCKERS.

Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

Here's the basic idea. You take bisoprolol to slow your heart rate and ease your blood pressure down. Lab research hints that hoodia may do the opposite by nudging your beta-adrenergic receptors, the very ones bisoprolol blocks. A few studies have also seen hoodia bump up blood pressure and heart rate. So in theory, pairing them could blunt how well your bisoprolol works, meaning your numbers might not stay as low as you'd like.

I want to be honest with you though: this is theoretical, based on how the chemistry should behave, not on real-world cases. Bisoprolol is not a prodrug, so this isn't about it building up or breaking down. Before adding hoodia, run it past your pharmacist or doctor, especially since hoodia hasn't proven it helps with weight anyway.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Hoodia

What is Hoodia?

Hoodia
  • Appetite suppression
  • Weight loss
  • Reducing food cravings
  • Traditional use for hunger and thirst on long journeys

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. The few quality studies done have not shown meaningful weight loss, and some products on the market may not even contain real hoodia. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
