Bisoprolol, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Ziac is a two-in-one blood pressure pill: bisoprolol (a beta blocker that slows your heart and eases its workload) plus hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid and salt). Both are working to bring your numbers down. The concern here is that hoodia has been shown in some research to raise blood pressure, which could push against what your Ziac is trying to do.

In plain terms, taking hoodia alongside Ziac might make the medication work a little less well, so you could see your readings creep up. To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how hoodia behaves, not strong proof in people on Ziac. Still, if you're tempted to try hoodia, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).

Your Ziac combines bisoprolol, a beta-blocker, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. Together they work to lower your blood pressure and slow a fast heart rate. Here's the concern with hoodia: in lab studies it appears to stimulate the same beta receptors that bisoprolol is trying to calm down, and some research suggests hoodia can actually nudge blood pressure and heart rate upward. That's the opposite of what your medication is doing.

So in theory, hoodia could work against your Ziac, meaning your blood pressure or pulse might creep up even while you're taking it. I'll be honest though, this is based on early pharmacology, not strong human proof, so don't panic. Before trying hoodia, run it past your pharmacist or doctor, especially since solid evidence it even helps with weight loss is thin.
