Why this applies to Clevidipine

Clevidipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the thing about clevidipine (Cleviprex): it's a fast-acting blood pressure medicine given through an IV, usually in a hospital or surgical setting to bring high blood pressure down quickly. Hoodia, on the other hand, has been shown in some research to actually raise blood pressure. So the worry is that hoodia could work against clevidipine and make it harder to keep your numbers controlled.

Honestly, this is a mostly theoretical concern, and since clevidipine is given in tightly monitored settings, your care team is watching your blood pressure minute by minute. Still, if you take or are thinking about taking hoodia, please mention it to your doctor or pharmacist so nothing surprises them.
