Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “L-Citrulline, Powder” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label doesn't break down how much of each component you get.

This powder contains one active ingredient: L-citrulline at 3,000 mg per serving. L-citrulline is an amino acid your body converts to another amino acid called L-arginine, which plays a role in blood vessel function and blood flow.

There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see L-citrulline's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: muscle protein synthesis, growth, and recovery.
  • We looked for evidence on: Muscle strength, Sarcopenia, Muscular dystrophy, exercise-induced muscle damage, post-workout recovery.
  • The closest evidence on file: L-citrulline is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Sarcopenia (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: L-citrulline is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Muscle strength, Muscular dystrophy.

L-citrulline is possibly effective for athletic performance — the evidence suggests it may offer some benefit for exercise. For sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), the evidence leans toward it being possibly ineffective.

For cardiovascular disease, heart failure, Reye syndrome, and diabetes, we don't have enough reliable evidence in our data to rate it one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-citrulline is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though long-term safety hasn't been fully studied. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — stomach discomfort and heartburn.

A small number of people taking it for pulmonary hypertension reported cough. There isn't enough safety data to use this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so those are situations to avoid it and talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-Citrulline may be worth considering if you're looking to support athletic performance, but if you're on blood pressure medication or take erectile dysfunction drugs, you'll want to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first. Stomach upset is possible, so start with a smaller amount if you're new to it.

Talk it over with your healthcare provider before you start, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medications.

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of L-citrulline with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the chance of hypotension.
L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine, which can increase nitric oxide and cause vasodilation. However, a meta-analysis of 5 small clinical studies suggests that taking L-citrulline 3-6 grams daily for 1-8 weeks does not lower blood pressure when compared with control.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors

Theoretically, concurrent use of phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors and L-citrulline might result in additive vasodilation.
L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine, which can increase nitric oxide and cause vasodilation. Theoretically, taking L-arginine with PDE-5 inhibitors might have additive vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. However, in studies evaluating the combined use of L-arginine and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, hypotension was not reported.

Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Citrulline 3000 mg Unflavored has a known interaction with 178 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Citrulline 3000 mg Unflavored contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-citrulline, and what does it do in my body?
L-citrulline is an amino acid that your body converts into another amino acid called L-arginine. That conversion helps your body make nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow. It's often used by people looking to boost athletic performance or support cardiovascular health.
Will this help me build muscle or improve my workouts?
L-citrulline is possibly effective for athletic performance, meaning the evidence suggests it may help, but it's not a guarantee. Results vary person to person, and it's not proven to be effective for age-related muscle loss.
What side effects should I watch for?
Most side effects are gastrointestinal — stomach discomfort and heartburn are the most common. A small number of people reported cough. It's generally well tolerated, but long-term safety hasn't been fully studied.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety data for either pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's safe for you during these times.
Is this product just L-citrulline, or does it have other stuff in it?
It's just L-citrulline — there are no fillers or other inactive ingredients listed. Each serving is 3,000 mg of the active ingredient.
