What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, 500 mg per tablet. L-glutamine is an amino acid—one of the building blocks your body uses to make proteins.
The remaining ingredients are inert fillers and binders like cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, and magnesium stearate that hold the tablet together and help your body absorb it.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence shows L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
Outside of those uses, the effectiveness data we hold doesn't cover other conditions people might take it for—that doesn't mean it doesn't work for them, just that we don't have established ratings on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral doses are gastrointestinal: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under your doctor's supervision.
Two cases of mania or hypomania have been reported in people with bipolar disorder taking higher doses (up to 4 grams daily), so that's worth discussing with your healthcare provider if that applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product—glutamine theoretically might reduce their effectiveness, though this hasn't yet been reported in actual patients. No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the active ingredient we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine is well tolerated and effective for sickle cell disease if that's why you're considering it. If you take anticonvulsants, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
People with kidney or liver disease should only use it under medical supervision. Your pharmacist can review your exact medications against this product before you start.
