L-Glutamine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
L-Glutamine is a single amino acid — one of the building blocks your body uses to make proteins and support immune function, gut health, and muscle recovery. This product contains 1 active ingredient and no inactive fillers or binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is rated Effective for sickle cell disease. It's rated Possibly Effective for HIV/AIDS-related weight loss, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
The strength of the evidence varies, so talk with your doctor about whether it fits your particular situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects are mild gastrointestinal ones — bloating, flatulence, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea — especially at higher doses (10–30 grams daily).
A few isolated cases of dizziness and mood changes (mania or hypomania) have been reported in people with bipolar disorder, and very high doses may cause ammonia buildup in your blood. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under medical supervision.
Safety data in pregnancy is considered likely safe, but data while breastfeeding is limited — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), double-check with your pharmacist before starting this product — glutamine theoretically might reduce their effectiveness, though it hasn't been seen in real patients yet. For all other medications, no interactions are documented in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and may support recovery after surgery or critical illness, though the evidence is stronger for some uses than others. If you take seizure medication, check with your pharmacist first.
Otherwise, it's generally easy on your stomach in healthy people, though you might feel some bloating or gas at higher doses.
