L-Glutamine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Klaire Labs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally. It's available here as a powder with no other active ingredients.
The supplement form is intended to provide extra glutamine when dietary intake or your body's own production may fall short — typically in cases of illness, injury, or stress.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is rated effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is rated possibly effective — meaning the research shows promise, but we don't yet have enough strong data to call it proven.
If you're considering it for any of these uses, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in healthy adults. Common side effects include belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and stomach pain.
A few cases of dizziness and headache have been reported, and rarely, mania or hypomania in people with bipolar disorder taking high doses. If you have kidney or liver disease, use it only under medical supervision.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplement doses during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises it — talk with your clinician before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (seizure medications), check your specific drug with the tool on this page. Glutamine could theoretically work against how these medications control seizures, though this hasn't been confirmed in actual patients.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine is a straightforward single-ingredient supplement that's generally well tolerated and shows real benefit for sickle cell disease. If you take anticonvulsants, check your specific medication before you start.
If you have kidney or liver disease, or you're pregnant or nursing, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Glutamine by Klaire Labs has one documented interaction to watch for: anticonvulsants (seizure medications).
Glutamine is broken down in your body into glutamate, an excitatory chemical in the brain. Theoretically, this could work against how anticonvulsants do their job — but this interaction hasn't actually been seen in humans yet.
It remains a theoretical concern based on how glutamine is metabolized.

If you take any seizure medication, check your specific drug with the search tool on this page before starting L-Glutamine. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether it's safe for you or if you need to adjust anything.
