L-Glutamine Powder Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine Powder against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally produces. Glutamine plays a role in immune function, gut health, and recovery from stress or illness — including after surgery or critical illness.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence backs glutamine for sickle cell disease. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma.
Beyond those uses, the evidence we hold isn't established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and GI pain.
A few cases of dizziness and headache have been reported, and in two people with bipolar disorder, mania or hypomania occurred at doses up to 4 grams daily. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision.
There isn't enough safety data in pregnancy, so avoid supplemental doses unless your doctor recommends them; the same goes for breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (drugs that prevent seizures), check your specific medication with the search tool on this page before starting L-glutamine. No other interaction types are documented for the ingredient we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
