Lacto-Pectin Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lacto-Pectin against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lacto-Pectin by Bio-Tech Pharmacal
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Lacto-Pectin contains 6 active ingredients—a proprietary blend of five live bacterial strains (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium breve, plus Lactobacillus casei)—along with inactive ingredients including gelatin capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, lemon pectin cellulose complex, and silica. These are probiotics—beneficial live bacteria meant to support gut health.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus supports possible effectiveness for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For the other bacterial strains in this product, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to say whether they work—most conditions show insufficient reliable evidence to rate them, and a couple of uses (age-related cognitive decline and sepsis for Bifidobacterium breve) are rated possibly ineffective.
Talk with your doctor about what this product might do for your specific needs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The main caution: because these are live organisms, there's a small theoretical risk of bacterial infection in people who are seriously ill or have weakened immune systems.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea are uncommon but can occur when you first start probiotics. For Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve, safety data are limited, so check with your doctor before use, especially if you're breastfeeding.
Rare cases of bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) have been reported in critically ill or premature infants receiving these organisms.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the key medication type to watch. Since this product contains live bacteria, taking antibiotics and this supplement at the same time could reduce the probiotics' effectiveness.
Separate your doses—ask your doctor or pharmacist how far apart to space them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lacto-Pectin is a multi-strain probiotic that may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and other gut concerns, though evidence is strongest for Lactobacillus acidophilus. The main thing to watch: don't take it at the same time as antibiotics—they'll kill the live bacteria.
If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor first. Check your medications with the tool on this page before you start.

Lacto-Pectin by Bio-Tech Pharmacal Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lacto-Pectin by Bio-Tech Pharmacal contains four live probiotic organisms—through its Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium breve content—that interact with antibiotic drugs.
The concern is moderate in severity: antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the product, which may reduce how well the probiotics work. We recommend separating when you take antibiotics from when you take this supplement by timing them apart.

We couldn't check two other bacterial strains in this product (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei) because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Before you start Lacto-Pectin, use the medication checker below to see if you're on any antibiotics or other drugs that might affect these probiotics. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you time your doses so the probiotics aren't wiped out.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium breve
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
