Lactozyme Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Biotics Research Corporation
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lactozyme against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lactozyme by Biotics Research Corporation
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Lactozyme contains three active ingredients: Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, both live-culture probiotics meant to support digestive and immune health, and a vegetable culture concentrate. The product is delivered in tablet or pill form and also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate—which are common binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections, though the evidence for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety is insufficient to rate. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, but appears possibly ineffective for atopic disease; evidence for acute respiratory distress syndrome is insufficient.
The evidence base for vegetable culture concentrate is not on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy people. However, those with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first, since the evidence is limited and safety is not fully established.
Bloating and flatulence can occur with probiotic use generally, though they haven't been specifically reported with B. bifidum alone. One case of vomiting and fever was reported in a child taking both probiotics together, but it's unclear if the probiotics caused it.
Rare cases of serious infection (sepsis, abscess, or meningitis) have been reported with Lactobacillus acidophilus, though most appear to stem from bacteria moving from elsewhere in the body rather than from the probiotic itself. Pregnancy is rated possibly safe for both ingredients, though lactation data are not on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main medication type to check: taking them with Lactozyme may reduce the probiotic's effectiveness, so separate them by several hours. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for the best timing in your case.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lactozyme may help with irritable bowel syndrome, certain infections, or antibiotic-related diarrhea if the research matches your situation. If you take antibiotics, space them away from this product to protect the live cultures.
Anyone with a weakened immune system, or anyone considering it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, should discuss it with their doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
