Maitake Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Maitake Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This liquid contains two active maitake mushroom ingredients: fresh mycelium extract and dried fruitbody extract—both from Grifola frondosa. The product also contains inactive ingredients: water, alcohol, and myceliated brown rice (a growth substrate).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for maitake mushroom's effectiveness is insufficient for us to rate it in the conditions studied—hay fever, chemotherapy-induced anemia, laryngeal cancer, chemotherapy-induced diarrhea, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The data we hold doesn't establish that this product works for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maitake mushroom is generally well tolerated when used as food, though supplement safety hasn't been fully studied. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal—diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and rarely rash or itching.
In clinical trials, a small number of patients reported these effects; one withdrew due to diarrhea. The safety data advises against this concentrated supplement during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this if you take warfarin or other blood thinners (risk of increased bleeding), blood pressure medications (risk of blood pressure dropping too low), or diabetes drugs (risk of blood sugar dropping too low). All three interactions are Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Maitake Extract may interest people exploring immune support, but the evidence we hold doesn't establish it works for its common uses. The bigger consideration: if you take blood thinners like warfarin, blood pressure medications, or diabetes drugs, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this—the interaction risk is real and documented.
Talk it over with them before you start.

Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Host Defense Mushrooms Maitake Extract contains maitake mushroom, which interacts with blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, and warfarin.
The most serious concern is warfarin: limited evidence suggests maitake can increase warfarin's blood-thinning effect. One patient on a stable warfarin dose developed a significantly elevated clotting time (INR of 5.1) after a week of maitake, which raises the risk of bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Combining maitake with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) may lower your blood pressure too much—animal research shows maitake itself can reduce blood pressure. Similarly, pairing it with diabetes drugs could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), since clinical research shows maitake polysaccharide can lower glucose levels in type 2 diabetes.
Altogether, these interactions span 260 individual medications. Before starting this product, check your exact medications with the search tool below, especially if you take blood thinners, blood pressure pills, or diabetes medications.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
