Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Maximum Krill Omega-3 is built on Antarctic Krill Oil and contains 7 active ingredients total. The krill oil itself supplies two omega-3 fatty acids—Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid—plus phospholipids, which are fat-like molecules that help carry those acids in your body.
The formula also includes Astaxanthin, a carotenoid compound from krill that acts as an antioxidant, and rounds out its omega-3 content with Other Omega-3 Fatty Acids and a Proprietary Orange essence for flavor. The capsule itself is a soft-gelatin shell, an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For krill oil specifically, the evidence supports its use for dry eye—the facts rate it Possibly Effective. Beyond that, the evidence on krill oil for aging skin, Alzheimer's disease, cancer prevention, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), or cognitive function is not established in our data.
Astaxanthin has been studied for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (vision loss), aging skin, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome, but the evidence for all of these is rated Insufficient—meaning the data we hold doesn't support a clear claim either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Krill oil is generally well tolerated, though the most common side effects are gastrointestinal: bloating, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fishy burps, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and stomach discomfort. Headache, tiredness, and dizziness have been reported rarely.
If you have a shellfish allergy, skip krill oil, and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder. Astaxanthin is also generally well tolerated but can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red fecal color; higher doses (40 mg daily) have caused severe stomach pain in a small number of trial participants.
Long-term safety data for astaxanthin are limited. For pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data for astaxanthin, so the data advise against it.
Krill oil has insufficient data as well—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it during pregnancy. The same goes for breastfeeding with both ingredients.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants)—krill oil may increase bleeding risk. Also flag your diabetes medications, since krill oil might theoretically lower blood sugar.
Finally, ask your pharmacist about any medications metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes, as astaxanthin may theoretically decrease their levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for help with dry eye, krill oil has some evidence behind it. This product is generally well tolerated, but gastrointestinal side effects are common.
Before you start, check your blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and any medications your liver breaks down—especially if you take higher doses. Chat with your pharmacist about your full medication list, and skip this product if you have a shellfish allergy or bleeding disorder.

Antarctic Krill are tiny, shrimp-like creatures that live in the oceans near Antarctica and represent one of the most abundant life forms on the planet.
Omega-3s are absolutely essential for our good health, yet they cannot be made by the body, so their benefits are only available from cold water fish or an Omega-3 dietary supplement. Research has shown that diets rich in Omega-3s are associated with superior heart, brain, circulatory and general health; yet sadly, the American diet delivers alarmingly low levels of these precious fatty acids.

Formula
Phospholipid-Based Omega-3s Higher Levels of Krill Oil EPA and DHA
Andrew Lessman’s Ultimate Krill Omega-3 provides phospholipid-based Omega-3s from Krill Oil, but does so without Krill Oil’s normally unpleasant fishy aftertaste.
Krill Oil provides a unique source of the most important Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, but in a distinctive and highly absorbable phospholipid form. Another bonus: Krill Oil’s rich reddish color comes from the presence of trace amounts of the protective carotenoid Astaxanthin.
Our Ultimate Krill Omega-3 provides a unique alternative to fish oil based Omega-3s, delivering higher levels of Omega-3s per capsule than typical Krill Oil products.
Contains an ingredient derived and purified from shellfish (krill).

Maximum Krill Omega-3 by ProCaps Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Maximum Krill Omega-3 by ProCaps Laboratories does interact with certain medication types.
The ingredient Antarctic Krill Oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that may theoretically increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants or antiplatelets)—a Moderate concern. These drugs work by reducing platelet stickiness, and krill oil appears to do the same, which could add up to unwanted bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Krill Oil also carries a Moderate interaction with diabetes medications. Animal and human research suggests krill oil might lower blood glucose (low blood sugar), so taking it alongside diabetes drugs could theoretically push your blood sugar too low.
One small study in people with type 2 diabetes didn't see this effect, so the risk remains theoretical.
Astaxanthin, another ingredient in this product, may theoretically decrease levels of drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes—both Moderate interactions. This effect has been seen in lab studies on human liver cells, but not yet confirmed in people taking astaxanthin by mouth.
We could not check three other ingredients: Eicosapentaenoic Acid, Docosahexaenoic Acid, Phospholipids, Other Omega-3 Fatty Acids, and Proprietary Orange essence. Altogether, these interactions span 827 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Maximum Krill Omega-3 with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Antarctic Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
