Multi Dophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Progressive Professional from Progressive Laboratories
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Multi Dophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Multi Dophilus is a liquid probiotic blend with three active ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum are live beneficial bacteria intended to support gut health, and fructooligosaccharides (a type of prebiotic fiber) are included to help feed those bacteria. There are no inactive fillers or other ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though the evidence isn't conclusive. It's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Bifidobacterium longum and fructooligosaccharides don't have established effectiveness for the conditions we checked — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate them. Talk with your doctor about whether this product is right for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Rare reports exist of serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, and others) tied to the organism, most likely in people with compromised immunity or after translocation from other body sites.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea are uncommon but can occur, particularly when combined with other probiotics. Bifidobacterium longum is also generally well tolerated in healthy people, though caution is advised for seriously ill or immune-compromised patients; rare cases of bacteremia have been reported in critically ill infants and preterm infants.
Fructooligosaccharides are well tolerated in food amounts but can cause gas, bloating, and abdominal pain at higher doses — supplement-level safety is limited. Neither probiotic ingredient has pregnancy or lactation data on file; fructooligosaccharides are listed as possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, seriously ill, or immune-compromised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
You'll want to double-check antibiotic drugs before taking this product. Both probiotics in the blend can be killed by antibiotics if taken at the same time, which may reduce their effectiveness — your pharmacist can help you space them out properly.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with certain digestive and gut-health concerns, particularly antibiotic-associated diarrhea, though evidence is mixed. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to time this supplement carefully to avoid reducing its benefit.
It's generally well tolerated in healthy people, but talk with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Multi Dophilus by Progressive Professional contains two live probiotic ingredients that interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious concern is Moderate: both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum can be killed by antibiotics taken at the same time, which may reduce how well the probiotics work. Since these products contain living organisms, antibiotics can wipe out a significant portion of them.
You'll want to space out your antibiotic doses and this supplement — ask your pharmacist or doctor for the right timing.

Fructooligosaccharides, the third ingredient, has no interactions documented in our data.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifido longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
