Both Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve are generally well tolerated in healthy people, but they come with cautions. If you're seriously ill, have a weakened immune system, or are in critical condition, these probiotics aren't appropriate—there are rare but documented cases of bloodstream infection (bacteremia) and sepsis in critically ill infants and adults who took them.

When taken by mouth, rare gastrointestinal side effects have been reported: abdominal discomfort, pain, bloating, flatulence, constipation, and in one case a dry cough. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe, but Bifidobacterium breve has limited safety data; check with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance before use in either situation.
