What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Proprietary Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (800 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil, a plant used traditionally for anxiety and stress. The capsules also contain cellulose as an inactive ingredient (a binder and filler).

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Holy Basil's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: promotes healthy stress response and supports adrenal function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Stress, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Insomnia, Adrenal support, Emotional resilience.
  • The closest evidence on file: Holy Basil is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Holy Basil is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Insomnia, Stress.

The evidence for holy basil isn't established in our data. The product is marketed for conditions like generalized anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, and diabetes, but our research summaries show insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for any of these uses.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the studies we have aren't robust enough to say either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Holy basil is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.

The safety data advise against using it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as animal studies raise concerns and human safety isn't established.

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 212 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check with your pharmacist before starting this product if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (moderate interaction risk), diabetes medications (moderate risk), or pentobarbital or other sedatives (moderate risk for increased sedation). No interactions are documented for other ingredients in our data.

Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded: Common Questions

Does Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Organic Holy Basil has a known interaction with 212 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Organic Holy Basil contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm on a blood thinner like warfarin?
Not without checking first. Holy basil may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners, though the evidence comes from animal studies, not humans. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
What are the side effects?
Most commonly, loose stools and nausea. A small number of people in studies experienced these. Long-term safety data are limited, so we know less about effects beyond short-term use.
Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Animal data raise safety concerns in pregnancy, and there isn't enough reliable information to use it while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Does holy basil actually work for anxiety?
The evidence isn't clear enough for us to say. Studies aren't robust enough yet to rate its effectiveness for anxiety or other conditions this product is marketed for.
Can I take this with my diabetes medication?
Not without checking first. Holy basil can lower blood sugar, so it might cause your blood sugar to drop too low if combined with diabetes drugs. Ask your pharmacist before starting.
