HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil, delivered as a proprietary blend in capsule form. Holy basil is a traditional herb used in Ayurvedic medicine and has been studied for its potential effects on anxiety, blood sugar, and inflammation.
The capsules also contain cellulose as an inactive ingredient (a filler and capsule material).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for holy basil is insufficient to establish whether it works for generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, or diabetes. While small studies have looked at its effects on blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients, the overall reliability of the evidence isn't high enough to make a confident claim.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're considering it for any of these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil is generally well tolerated in the short term, but high-quality long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects in studies were loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.
The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because animal data raise concerns and human safety isn't established. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin (anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, or the sedative pentobarbital — these are Moderate-severity concerns. No other interactions are documented for holy basil in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Organic Holy Basil may appeal to you if you're interested in traditional herbal support, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. The main caution is with blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and sedatives — check your medications first.
Because safety in pregnancy and while breastfeeding isn't well established, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting if that applies to you.

Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded contains holy basil, which has documented interactions with blood thinners (anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, and the sedative pentobarbital.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners: animal research suggests holy basil seed oil may slow clotting and raise bleeding risk, though this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Diabetes drugs are a Moderate concern too — small studies show holy basil can lower fasting blood sugar, so combining it with diabetes medication could theoretically drop your blood sugar too low (hypoglycemia). With pentobarbital (a barbiturate sedative), holy basil seed oil may strengthen its sedative effects in animal models, but again, human data are lacking.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact prescriptions through the search tool on this page — especially if you take any blood thinner, diabetes medicine, or sedative.

Holy Basil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
