What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: spirulina, a blue-green algae. It's a whole-food supplement that provides various nutrients and compounds your body may use for different functions.
The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on spirulina for most uses is mixed. Research suggests it may be possibly effective for high blood pressure.
For acne, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, we don't have reliable evidence yet to say whether it works or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are stomach upset—abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence—along with dizziness, fatigue, and headache.
Allergic reactions including rashes and itching have occurred, and in rare cases, severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with swelling and breathing trouble has been reported. A few people taking spirulina have experienced mild gum bleeding or bruising.
One major concern: quality varies widely. Some spirulina products are contaminated with toxins or heavy metals.
Because of contamination risk and limited safety data, it's best to be cautious with this product, especially long-term.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check this product before starting if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate concern), immunosuppressants used after transplant (Moderate concern), or diabetes medications (Moderate concern).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spirulina may be worth trying if you're interested in its possible benefit for blood pressure, but you'll want to run it past your pharmacist first—especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or immunosuppressants. Buy from a reputable maker and watch for stomach upset.
Quality and contamination are real concerns with blue-green algae products.

Organic Spirulina 500 mg by LuckyVitamin Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Organic Spirulina 500 mg by LuckyVitamin does interact with medications in a few important ways.
The main concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin and aspirin). Spirulina shows antiplatelet and blood-thinning effects in lab studies, and while a real-world risk is considered unlikely, there is a theoretical possibility of increased bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spirulina may also interfere with immunosuppressant medications used after organ transplant or for autoimmune conditions, since it stimulates immune function. Additionally, it could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're taking diabetes medications, based on human research showing spirulina can lower blood glucose.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions with the search tool on this page before starting.

Spirulina
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
