Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Chlorophyll's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy blood cells.
  • We looked for evidence on: Wound healing, Anemia, Red blood cell health, Hematopoiesis.
  • The closest evidence on file: Chlorophyll is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Wound healing (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for chlorophyll's effectiveness is not yet established in the data we hold. It has been studied for genital herpes, wound healing, shingles, nonmelanoma skin cancer, and pancreatitis, but the available evidence is insufficient to rate whether it actually works for any of these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated in short-term use, though high-quality safety data are limited. The most common side effect when taken orally is photosensitization — increased sensitivity to sunlight.

A rare serious effect reported in case reports is pseudoporphyria, a condition causing blistering on sun-exposed skin. Topical use can cause skin irritation.

The safety data advise against use during pregnancy, and there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor before using it in either situation.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorophyll.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 337 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist if you take photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity) or methotrexate. Both carry Moderate interaction risk with chlorophyll.

No interactions are documented for other medication types, but the interaction checker below will tell you if your exact drugs are affected.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chlorophyll may be worth considering if you're exploring it for one of the studied conditions, but the evidence doesn't yet support its use. The main caution is photosensitivity, especially if you take other sun-sensitizing medications or are spending time in the sun.

If you take methotrexate or any photosensitizing drug, check with your pharmacist before starting. Talk with your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Methotrexate (Trexall, Others)

Theoretically, chlorophyll may reduce the clearance of methotrexate.
In one case report, a 54-year-old male developed delayed clearance of intravenous high-dose methotrexate with concomitant use of chlorophyll. When chlorophyll was stopped 2 days prior to methotrexate treatment, methotrexate clearance was unaffected.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Photosensitizing Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.
