HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ortho Spore Complete by Ortho Molecular Products
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Ortho Spore Complete is a 5-ingredient capsule built on four live bacterial strains: LactoSpore (Bacillus coagulans), Bacillus clausii (B106), Bacillus coagulans (SNZ1969), Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus subtilis (HS43). These are all probiotics — beneficial organisms meant to support your gut health.
The product also contains inactive ingredients (microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, and silicon dioxide) that act as capsule fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed. Bacillus coagulans strains show possibly effective ratings for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), while Bacillus subtilis strains are possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
For other uses listed — athletic performance, cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, eczema, diabetes, and cirrhosis — the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to rate them either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but the evidence and product quality vary, and safety data overall is limited. Before using, talk to your doctor — especially important because live organisms in probiotic products can, rarely, cause serious infections (bacteremia and sepsis) in people with weakened immune systems, central lines, or severe illness.
Reported side effects in trials include headache and diarrhea, though diarrhea is rare. Pregnancy and lactation safety data isn't on file for these ingredients — discuss with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotics are the main one to double-check. Taking them at the same time as this product may reduce how well the probiotics work, so you'll want to separate the doses.
Ask your pharmacist for the right timing before you begin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with constipation, IBS, or antibiotic-related diarrhea if you're otherwise healthy. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to space them apart from this product — talk to us about timing.
If you're immunocompromised, have a central line, or are severely ill, check with your doctor first. Run your medications through our checker before you start.

Ortho Spore Complete by Ortho Molecular Products Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ortho Spore Complete contains four live-organism probiotic strains, and antibiotics are the main medication concern.
Taking antibiotics at the same time as this product may kill off a significant portion of the live organisms, which could reduce the probiotic's effectiveness. The good news: you can avoid this by spacing them apart — ask us or your doctor how many hours work best for your situation.

LactoSpore
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.
Bacillus subtilis
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.
