Pro-Biotics Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pro-Biotics Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pro-Biotics Acidophilus by Nutrition Now
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains 10 active ingredients, most of them live probiotic bacteria. The checked ones are Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and inulin (a fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria).
We also list Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, and a proprietary probiotic blend—though we don't have interaction data for several of these. The inactive ingredients are the capsule itself and silica.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections.
Inulin is possibly effective for obesity, constipation, and diabetes. Bifidobacterium longum has insufficient evidence in our data for the conditions it's been studied in.
For most of the other probiotic strains in this product, effectiveness ratings aren't available in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The checked probiotic ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though caution is advised for people with weakened immune systems or serious illness—there have been rare cases of dangerous bloodstream infections (bacteremia and sepsis) in critically ill and premature infants. Inulin commonly causes gas, bloating, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, especially at higher doses; anaphylaxis has been reported rarely with high-inulin foods.
Gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal discomfort, flatulence, and constipation have been reported rarely with the probiotic strains. One person reported a dry cough.
For pregnancy and lactation, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and inulin are rated possibly safe or likely safe, though data are limited—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your pharmacist or doctor about antibiotic drugs—all three checked Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species carry a Moderate interaction risk and may lose effectiveness if taken at the same time. Also double-check antidiabetes medications, since inulin carries a Minor interaction and might increase low blood sugar risk.
The product contains several probiotic strains we couldn't check for interactions, so running your full medication list through the tool below is important.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic blend may help with IBS, certain digestive infections, and constipation, mainly through its Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium strains. If you take antibiotics, space them apart from this product so the live organisms aren't killed.
People with diabetes on blood-sugar medications should check their exact drugs with their pharmacist, since inulin may interact. If you're critically ill or immune-compromised, talk with your doctor before starting it.

Pro-Biotics Acidophilus by Nutrition Now Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nutrition Now Pro-Biotics Acidophilus interacts with medications through its Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and inulin content.
The most serious concern is a Moderate interaction with antibiotic drugs: since these probiotic ingredients contain live organisms, taking antibiotics at the same time might kill enough of them to reduce the product's effectiveness. The three Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species all carry this same Moderate risk with antibiotics.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Inulin carries a Minor interaction with diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs). It may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), though the evidence on whether inulin actually lowers blood sugar on its own is unclear.
We could not check several other ingredients in this blend—Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus casei—because interaction data isn't available for them. Altogether, these interactions span 268 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of yours are affected.

For each ingredient in Pro-Biotics Acidophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Inulin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
