youtheory Probiotic Powder contains five active ingredients: a proprietary blend of probiotics (beneficial bacteria), plus fructooligosaccharides and xylo-oligosaccharides (both prebiotics — fibers that feed friendly bacteria), and two additional Bacillus strains. The two named probiotics are Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis, both live organisms designed to support digestive health.
The product also includes inactive ingredients (maltodextrin and silicon dioxide) as fillers and flow agents.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Bacillus coagulans is rated possibly effective for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Bacillus subtilis is rated possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
For constipation with B. subtilis, and for other claimed uses like athletic performance, cancer, or fatty liver disease, the evidence isn't established in our data. Fructooligosaccharides show insufficient evidence for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, and high cholesterol.
The effectiveness of Xylo-oligosaccharides and Bacillus clausii isn't rated in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Fructooligosaccharides are generally well tolerated at food levels but can cause gas, bloating, and abdominal pain, especially at higher doses. A meta-analysis of clinical trials found no increase in these side effects at doses up to 15 grams daily compared to placebo.
Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis are generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but safety data is limited and quality varies by product. Rare cases of infection (bacteremia, meningitis) have been reported in severely ill or immunocompromised patients taking live Bacillus preparations.
One headache and rare cases of diarrhea were reported in trials. Pregnancy and lactation data is not on file for any ingredient — talk with your doctor about whether this product is right for you during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Bacillus coagulans MTCC-5856
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.
Bacillus subtilis (MTCC 5981)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.
