Probiotic Complex 50 Billion CFUs Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Complex 50 Billion CFUs against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 5 active ingredients: two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, and fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber). The bacterial strains are live, active probiotics—beneficial microorganisms meant to support your gut.
Fructooligosaccharides act as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria already in your system. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: vegetarian capsule shell, microcrystalline cellulose, silica, magnesium stearate, and titanium dioxide.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for these ingredients is mixed. The bacterial strains—both Lactobacillus acidophilus strains and Bifidobacterium bifidum—show possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium lactis is also rated possibly effective for respiratory tract infections and constipation. However, the data we hold don't establish effectiveness for fructooligosaccharides—the evidence for it is insufficient to rate for osteoporosis, constipation, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, and high cholesterol.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The bacterial strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Common mild side effects from probiotics include bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and diarrhea—but these are usually uncommon.
Fructooligosaccharides can cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses; studies show that doses under 10 grams per day are generally mild, though some people notice these effects more than others. There is a theoretical concern that live probiotics might cause infection in people with very weakened immune systems, so if that applies to you, check with your doctor first.
Pregnancy safety for Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum is rated possibly safe, but data aren't on file for Bifidobacterium lactis or fructooligosaccharides in pregnancy—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check antibiotic drugs before taking this product. Since the probiotic contains live organisms, antibiotics can kill them off, making the probiotic less effective—your doctor or pharmacist can help you space them apart.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic complex is built around strains with possibly effective evidence for gut and immune support—mainly IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and some respiratory and allergy concerns. If you take antibiotics, you'll want to separate the timing from this supplement to avoid killing off the live bacteria.
It's generally well tolerated, though bloating and gas can happen, especially when you first start. Run your exact medications through the tool on this page, and chat with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant.

Probiotic Complex 50 Billion CFUs by GNC Probiotic Complex Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Probiotic Complex interacts with antibiotic drugs through its four live bacterial strains—Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL 60 and CUL 21), Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium lactis.
The interaction is Moderate in severity: antibiotics may kill the live organisms in the probiotic, reducing its effectiveness. Since these bacteria are living microorganisms, taking antibiotics at the same time could wipe out a significant portion of them before they reach your gut.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the interaction is documented, it's manageable. You can separate when you take your antibiotic from when you take this probiotic—your pharmacist or doctor can advise on timing.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber in this product) has no documented interactions with medications. No interactions are documented in our data for the other ingredients we could check, but that doesn't guarantee none exist—use the medication search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions.

For each ingredient in Probiotic Complex 50 Billion CFUs with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL 60)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL 20)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL 34)
Antibiotic Drugs
