What is this page for?

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Digestive Support by Vitamer Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 19 active and inactive ingredients designed to support digestion. The digestive enzymes are Protease, Lipase, Lactase, Peptidase, Glucoamylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, and Acid Maltase — together they help break down protein, fat, carbohydrates, and complex sugars.
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), a type of prebiotic fiber extracted from chicory, feeds beneficial bacteria. The probiotic component is a blend of 20 billion organisms across 10 strains, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and several others, meant to support gut flora balance.
The inactive ingredients are gelatin capsule and microcrystalline cellulose.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed and limited. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, and possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori infection.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance.
However, most of the other ingredients — including Protease, Lipase, FOS, Bifidobacterium longum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus — show insufficient reliable evidence for their intended uses, meaning we don't yet have strong proof they work for the conditions they're marketed toward.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Protease and Lipase can cause digestive upset in some people, and rare allergic reactions have been reported with protease.
FOS commonly causes gas and bloating, especially at higher doses, though clinical trials suggest doses under 10 grams daily are usually mild. The probiotic strains carry a rare but serious concern: in very ill, immune-compromised, or premature infants, some probiotics have caused bacterial bloodstream infections (bacteremia or sepsis).
Healthy people with intact immune systems are at much lower risk. For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are possibly safe, and Lactase is likely safe; for the others, data are limited and you should check with your doctor.
Breastfeeding safety data are limited across most ingredients — ask your healthcare provider before regular use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, check the timing with your pharmacist before adding this product — the live bacteria can be killed if taken at the same time. We don't hold interaction data for several of this product's ingredients, so confirm your exact medications on this page before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you're dealing with lactose intolerance or IBS, or if you're taking antibiotics and want to replenish gut bacteria (by spacing doses apart). If you're on antibiotics, very ill, or have a weakened immune system, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Most healthy adults will likely tolerate it, though gas and bloating are common, especially when you first begin. Run your medications through the interaction checker on this page to make sure it's right for you.

Probiotic Digestive Support by Vitamer Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Digestive Support by Vitamer Laboratories contains several probiotic strains that interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious concern is a Moderate-severity interaction: when you take certain probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) at the same time as antibiotics, the antibiotics may kill enough of the live organisms in the supplement to reduce its effectiveness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
The good news is that this interaction is avoidable. If you're on antibiotics, you can separate your doses — most commonly, space them at least 2 hours apart, though your doctor or pharmacist can give you the exact timing for your specific antibiotic and probiotic.
We don't have interaction data for several other ingredients in this product (Amylase, Peptidase, Glucoamylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Acid Maltase, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactococcus lactis, and Lactobacillus casei), so we can't rule out additional interactions we haven't checked.
Use the search tool on this page to look up your exact medications before you start.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
