Probiotics Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Pharmax
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotics against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
Probiotics is a dietary supplement by Pharmax with 4 active ingredients. Its ingredients are commonly taken for digestive health and balance, diarrhea (including antibiotic-related), vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.Based on those ingredients, 182 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. The ingredients most likely to interact are Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60), Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20), Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-34). Use the checker below to test your specific medication, or read the full HelloPharmacist Interaction Report.

What’s inside
Low disclosure
Pharmax Probiotics contains 4 active ingredients: two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60 and CUL-21), one strain of Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20), and one strain of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-34). These are live, beneficial bacteria meant to support gut and digestive health.
The capsules also contain cellulose and hypromellose as inactive ingredients (the capsule material and binders).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed and depends on what you're hoping to use them for. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis; it's possibly ineffective for atopic disease, and the evidence is insufficient for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections, but evidence is insufficient for hay fever, Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is possibly effective for respiratory tract infections, IBS, and constipation.
In short: these strains may help with digestive and some respiratory complaints, but the evidence is modest and condition-dependent.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated by healthy adults and children. That said, the data come with caveats: there's potential concern that live probiotic organisms, in rare cases, might cause infection in people with weakened immune systems or certain serious illnesses, and a few isolated cases of serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, endocarditis) have been tied to Lactobacillus acidophilus, though these are thought to arise from bacteria that translocated from elsewhere in the body rather than from the supplement itself.
More commonly, you might notice mild gastrointestinal side effects—bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea—but these are uncommon. Rash and itching have been reported rarely in one trial, though it's unclear if the probiotics were responsible.
Before you start, especially if you have a weakened immune system, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, separate your doses from this probiotic by several hours—antibiotics can kill the live organisms and reduce the probiotic's effectiveness. This is a Moderate interaction.
Before starting, run your exact medications through the checker on this page to confirm there are no other interactions we haven't documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pharmax Probiotics may be worth considering if you have IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, respiratory issues, or constipation—though the evidence is modest. The main thing to watch is separating doses from antibiotics so the antibiotics don't kill the live bacteria.
If you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Probiotics by Pharmax Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pharmax Probiotics contains four probiotic strains, and through its Lactobacillus acidophilus (both CUL-60 and CUL-21), Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis content, it interacts with antibiotic drugs.
The concern is Moderate: since these probiotics are live organisms, antibiotics taken at the same time may kill them and reduce their effectiveness. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.

The key point is timing. You'll want to separate when you take antibiotics from when you take this probiotic—your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on the right spacing.
If you're already on an antibiotic course and want to add probiotics, or vice versa, check with your healthcare provider about the best schedule.
No interactions are documented in our data for the other ingredients we checked. That said, this information is not a guarantee that no other interactions exist.
