Propolis is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin in the short term. Some people report mild headache — about 7% of trial participants taking 250 mg twice daily for 4 months had one.

Topically, it can occasionally cause contact dermatitis or cheilitis (lip irritation) in sensitive individuals. More serious allergic reactions are rare but possible, especially in people allergic to bees or bee products.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
