Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Hard Rhino's Pure D-Ribose Powder contains one active ingredient: D-Ribose, a five-carbon sugar your body makes naturally and uses to produce energy in muscle cells. The powder form is D-Ribose only — no added fillers or binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Ribose product and its label doesn't state a use — see Ribose's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold shows mixed results. D-Ribose is rated possibly ineffective for athletic performance and McArdle disease.

For restless legs syndrome, heart failure, muscle soreness, and recovery after bypass surgery, the evidence is insufficient — we simply don't have reliable data yet to say whether it works or doesn't. Talk with your doctor about whether this supplement makes sense for what you're trying to address.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

D-Ribose is generally well tolerated over the short term (up to about a month in the research we have), but long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of using it regularly. The most common side effects are diarrhea, stomach discomfort, headache, nausea, and — because it lowers blood sugar — low blood sugar itself.

A small number of people also reported anxiety, lightheadedness, or increased appetite; in those cases, lowering the dose resolved the symptoms. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against use.

If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Ribose.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before starting D-Ribose, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take insulin or any antidiabetes medication (such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or GLP-1 agonists). Both types carry a Moderate risk of low blood sugar when combined with ribose.

No interactions are documented for other medication types in our data.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

D-Ribose might appeal to you if you're exploring options for athletic performance or certain muscle conditions, but the evidence of benefit is thin or missing. If you take insulin or blood-sugar-lowering medication, this product poses a moderate risk of dropping your blood sugar too far — check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

For anyone else, the main watch-outs are digestive upset and the possibility of low blood sugar if you take a higher dose.
