Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient powder: DMAE L-Bitartrate (also known as deanol). There are no other active ingredients.
The product contains no inactive fillers or excipients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for DMAE L-Bitartrate is limited and largely unfavorable. It's rated likely ineffective for Alzheimer disease and tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder).
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it one way or the other. If you're considering this for any of those uses, the data we hold doesn't show strong support.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Deanol is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common ones reported in trials are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
Less commonly, it's been linked to constipation, headache, insomnia, overstimulation, confusion, depression, and in people with schizophrenia, worsening of symptoms. At higher doses (above 1,000 mg daily), mood changes including depression and hypomania have been reported in people with psychiatric conditions.
The safety data in pregnancy is too limited to know either way — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or planning to be. The data advises against use while breastfeeding because safety is unknown.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before you take this, double-check any anticholinergic drugs (used for overactive bladder and certain poisonings) or cholinergic drugs (such as those for myasthenia gravis) — deanol may decrease the effectiveness of the first group and increase the effects and side effects of the second. Use the medication checker on this page to confirm your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
DMAE L-Bitartrate may be worth considering if you're exploring options for cognition or skin, but the evidence for it is thin. Before you take it, check your medications against the interaction list on this page — especially if you take anticholinergic or cholinergic drugs.
If you have a history of psychiatric symptoms or schizophrenia, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first, because higher doses have been reported to affect mood. And if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either, discuss this with your own healthcare provider.

DMAE L-Bitartrate by Hard Rhino Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hard Rhino's DMAE L-Bitartrate can interact with medications through its deanol content, which affects how your body uses a brain chemical called acetylcholine.
The most serious documented interactions are Minor in severity and involve two drug categories: anticholinergic drugs (which treat overactive bladder, certain types of poisoning, and other conditions) and cholinergic drugs (which strengthen muscle contractions and are used for myasthenia gravis and other nerve-muscle disorders).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Deanol is thought to raise acetylcholine levels in your body. Because of this, it may theoretically decrease how well anticholinergic drugs work, and it may increase both the effects and side effects of cholinergic drugs.
Neither interaction has been extensively studied in humans, but the potential is real enough to warrant checking before you combine this product with either drug type.
Altogether, these interactions span 219 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page to see if any of yours are on the list.
