Does it work?
Strong evidence
SAMe is likely effective for osteoarthritis, based on available research. It's possibly effective for depression and possibly effective for cholestasis (a liver condition involving reduced bile flow).
For Alzheimer's disease and ADHD, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate how well it works. If you're considering SAMe for any of these conditions, talk it over with your doctor to see if it fits your situation.

SAMe is generally well tolerated when taken at typical doses, though side effects become more common at higher doses. The most common ones are stomach upset — nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gas, heartburn — along with headache, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, and nervousness.
Some people report rash, itching, or hair loss. There's one important caution: SAMe can trigger mania in people with bipolar disorder, so it's not safe for that condition.
Safety data isn't well established overall, so use it only under guidance from your healthcare provider.

Formula
200 mg Elemental SAMe S-Adenosyl L-Methionine
Each tablet contains a full 200 mg of elemental SAMe from 400 mg SAMe tosylate disulfate.
SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine) is a derivative of the essential amino acid L-methionine and is formed by combining ATP with L-methionine. SAMe is a chiral molecule and consists of two stereoisomers: (S,S) and (R,S). This SAMe has a high level (65%) of the (S,S) isomer, the biologically active form.

Do not exceed 1,600 mg SAMe per day (8 tablets). Do not take at night since product may cause anxiety, restlessness and insomnia.

Formulation
This SAMe is a pharmaceutical grade, stabilized SAMe manufactured under low temperature and low humidity conditions.
These enteric extended release tablets offer improved delivery and comply with or exceed the standards established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Slow-release coating technology optimizes stability in the stomach and enhances direct release and absorption in the small intestine.
SAMe has a long history of clinical use with proven benefits for brain metabolism, joint function, and liver detoxification. Some of the reported beneficial actions of SAMe include: Joint and Connective Tissue Strength SAMe supports production of healthy connective tissue and joint structures by contributing its sulfur component for transulfuration processes that help form glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates, critical components of connective tissues. Brain Metabolism SAMe serves as a major source of methyl groups used by the brain in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, L-dopa, dopamine, and related hormones involved in mood regulation. Liver Function Metabolism of SAMe supports synthesis of glutathione and glutathione-dependant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase), which are important antioxidants used in liver detoxification processes.
Free of the following common allergens: milk/casein, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat/gluten, and soybeans.
SAMe 200 is provided in individual foil blister-packets to maximize product stability.

S-Adenosyl L-Methionine
Levodopa
SAMe might reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
SAMe methylates levodopa, which might reduce its effectiveness for treating Parkinson disease.
Serotonergic Drugs
Taking SAMe with serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects.
SAMe has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with SAMe might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. In one case report, SAMe 100 mg intramuscularly was given daily with clomipramine (Anafranil) 25 mg per day. When the clomipramine dose was increased to 75 mg per day the patient experienced serotonin syndrome about 48-72 hours later, requiring hospitalization.
