Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Sang Shen is a liquid extract of white mulberry dried fruit. It's a single-ingredient product with one active ingredient: the fruit extract itself.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient White Mulberry product and its label doesn't state a use — see White Mulberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that white mulberry is effective for any condition. The data shows insufficient reliable evidence for its use in androgenic alopecia, osteoporosis, common cold, diabetes, or high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia).

While research suggests it may lower blood glucose, we don't have enough data to rate it as a proven treatment for diabetes.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

White mulberry leaf is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. In one clinical study, gastrointestinal side effects—bloating, flatulence, loose stools, and constipation—occurred in a portion of participants taking 4.6 grams three times daily for 4 weeks, but these effects often decreased over the longer term.

The product label notes that concentrated supplements are less studied than whole food use and may lower blood sugar. There isn't enough safety data to support medicinal amounts during pregnancy or breastfeeding; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 87 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your antidiabetes medications (like metformin or insulin) and any other drugs that rely on OCT2 kidney transporters before taking this product. White mulberry can lower blood glucose and may slow the clearance of these medications, raising their side effects.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you're on diabetes medications or take drugs cleared through the OCT2 kidney transporter, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting Sang Shen, since it may affect how these work. Gastrointestinal side effects are possible but often mild and temporary.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
