Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Sea buckthorn whole herb concentrate.
  • We looked for evidence on: Dry skin, Dry eye, Dyspepsia, Wound healing, Aging skin, Wrinkled skin — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Sea Buckthorn is rated "Possibly Effective" for Burns (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Sea Buckthorn is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Atopic dermatitis (eczema).
  • Also on file: Sea Buckthorn is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Aging skin, Radiation dermatitis, Dry eye, Dry skin, and more.

Sea buckthorn is possibly effective for burns based on available evidence. For eczema (atopic dermatitis), the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For other uses listed — high cholesterol (dyslipidemia), aging skin, and cancer — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate it either way. For larch arabinogalactan, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for the common cold or high cholesterol.

Both ingredients lack strong proof of benefit for most of their studied uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 2 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Sea buckthorn is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement safety hasn't been fully studied, so use caution. At very high doses, it can cause yellow staining of the skin; one person who took 100 grams daily for 6 months developed generalized yellowing.

Applied to skin, it may rarely cause dryness, redness, rash, or irritation. Larch arabinogalactan is generally well tolerated as a fiber, though some people experience bloating and gas.

Long-term safety data for both ingredients are limited. There isn't enough data to know whether either ingredient is safe during breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using if you're nursing.

The facts don't contain pregnancy safety information, so discuss that with your provider too.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 2 of the 2 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Sea Buckthorn, Larch Arabinogalactan.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; immunosuppressants / transplant drugs.
  • For scale: 408 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check your blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin) — sea buckthorn may raise bleeding risk. Also check any blood pressure medications you take, since sea buckthorn itself can lower blood pressure.

If you're on immunosuppressants after a transplant or for an autoimmune condition, ask your pharmacist — larch arabinogalactan may interfere with how well they work.

Sea Buckthorn 400 mg by Eclectic Herb: Common Questions

Does Sea Buckthorn 400 mg by Eclectic Herb interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Sea Buckthorn 400 mg has a known interaction with 408 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Sea Buckthorn 400 mg contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this turn my skin yellow?
High doses of sea buckthorn can cause yellow staining of the skin, especially with very high amounts over months. The 400 mg dose in this product is much smaller than the 100 grams daily that caused yellowing in one reported case, but it's still something to watch for if you take it long-term.
What's larch arabinogalactan for?
It's a soluble fiber from larch tree wood. The facts we hold don't show strong evidence it works for the common cold or cholesterol, but it's generally well tolerated — though some people notice bloating or gas.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's okay while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you during nursing.
Is this safe long-term?
Sea buckthorn is generally well tolerated as a food, but long-term supplement safety hasn't been fully studied. Same with larch arabinogalactan — we have limited long-term data. Ask your pharmacist about how long you plan to take it.
What does sea buckthorn actually do?
It's possibly effective for burns based on the evidence we hold. For eczema, the research suggests it's not likely to help. For aging skin, high cholesterol, and cancer, we don't have enough good evidence to say either way.
