What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: serrapeptase, an enzyme. The other ingredients are inactive — they're part of the capsule and help it hold together and dissolve properly.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Serrapeptase's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support healthy inflammation response and mucus viscosity.
  • We looked for evidence on: Back pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Chronic bronchitis, Fibromyalgia, Laryngitis, Osteoarthritis — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Serrapeptase is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Chronic bronchitis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Serrapeptase is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Back pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, and more.

The evidence for serrapeptase isn't established in the data we hold. Our monograph lists several conditions it's been studied for — including chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, back pain, and osteoporosis — but the rating for each is insufficient reliable evidence to rate.

That means the research so far hasn't been strong enough to say whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Short-term, serrapeptase appears to be generally well tolerated. The most common side effects reported in trials were epigastric pain (pain in the upper belly), stomach upset, and nausea — though these occurred at about the same rate as placebo, suggesting they may not be directly caused by the supplement.

A rare serious side effect, bullous pemphigoid (a blistering skin condition), has been reported. Long-term safety hasn't been well studied.

There isn't enough safety data to know whether serrapeptase is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Meds to double-check

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Serrapeptase.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications (like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or apixaban), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting serrapeptase — there's a moderate risk that combining them could increase bleeding and bruising. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Serrapeptase may appeal to you if you're exploring options for chronic bronchitis, asthma, or other conditions it's been studied for — but the evidence so far is too thin to say it works. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement, since the combination could theoretically increase bleeding risk.

Serrapeptase by Source Naturals: Common Questions

Does Serrapeptase by Source Naturals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Serrapeptase has a known interaction with 122 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Serrapeptase contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is serrapeptase?
Serrapeptase is an enzyme — a protein that breaks down other molecules. It's been studied for conditions like chronic bronchitis and asthma, though the evidence so far isn't strong enough to say it works for any of them.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data isn't there either way. There's not enough information to know if serrapeptase is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
What side effects might I experience?
Most people tolerate it well. The side effects reported in trials — stomach pain, upset stomach, and nausea — showed up at about the same rate as placebo. A rare serious side effect, a blistering skin condition called bullous pemphigoid, has been reported in very few cases.
How long has the long-term safety been studied?
Long-term safety isn't well studied. We have decent short-term safety data, but we don't know much about what happens if you take it for months or years.
